Community Call Recap: Cyber Security, Open Source, and Thread
As 2024 ends and 2025 begins, we reflect on our first two pilot Community Calls. Our calls are virtual events where we share our open-source projects, connect with a global community, and engage in dialogue about the broader open-source cyber security ecosystem.
In October of 2024, we hosted our first virtual community call during Hacktoberfest. Hacktoberfest is a global event to get more folks interested in and working on open-source projects. And in November we shared more about our open-source cyber threat intelligence tool, Thread.
Cyber Security & Open Source? Hacktoberfest with Arachne Digital
In this event, we shared more about Arachne Digital, our open-source cyber threat intelligence tool Thread, and our partnership with the DISARM Foundation.
DISARM is an open framework for those cooperating in the fight against disinformation. They create and maintain an open-source, master framework for fighting disinformation through sharing data and analysis and coordinating effective action.
Our co-founder, Kade Morton, Community Manager, Vic Pe, and the Disarm Chief Technology Officer, Stephen Cambell were joined with folks across timezones and the world.
In this event, we shared that according to Google trends, there’s been a global decrease in interest in Open Source while conversely, interest in cyber security is rising. Still, companies like Github, events like Hacktoberfest, and various organizations (ourselves and our partners included) are elevating interests and continuing conversations that center collaboration in tech spaces.
The event served as a good opportunity to work with a partner publicly and provide a learning and social opportunity for folks interested in working in open-source cyber security. We were joined by folks all the way from Birmingham, Alabama to London, UK.
👾 We’re currently working to implement DISARM in our project, Thread, and will continue our partnership in 2025. Check out our open issues on Github here.

Open Source Cyber Security: A Walkthrough of Thread
In our second event we focused on our primary open source project, the cyber threat intelligence tool, Thread. Here, we were thrilled to again be joined by folks across the globe, with attendees tuning in from Canada to England.
Thread is an open-source cyber security initiative dedicated to enhancing cyber threat intelligence (CTI) mapping. It does this by automating the process of linking cyber security reports and articles to the MITRE ATT&CK® database for identification and is a fork of the open source project, TRAM.
During our call, we shared a dictionary of common phrases used by ourselves and others in the cyber security community.

Our Co-founder, Kade Morton gave a walkthrough of the online application we currently host. Co-founder Jenine Carron, gave us the rundown on how to download and use Thread locally.
